Curatorial Notes

Painted around 1700, this work depicts the Virgin Mary contemplating the sleeping Christ Child in her arms, accompanied by two angels in an attitude of adoration. In the background, Saint Joseph appears absorbed in reading a book while wearing spectacles, an uncommon detail in depictions of the Holy Family and one highlighted by the Metropolitan Museum. The scene reveals a more intimate side of Sebastiano Ricci, an artist best known for his grand religious and mythological compositions. The delicate gestures and domestic atmosphere reflect the influence of Ludovico Carracci, whose paintings Ricci had the opportunity to study during his stay in Bologna, beginning around 1678. Rather than depicting a specific event from the Gospels, the painter presents a peaceful moment, inviting viewers to contemplate Christ's humanity and his Mother's tenderness. The work also demonstrates how Baroque painting could approach religious subjects through serene domestic scenes, without relying on the dramatic intensity characteristic of many compositions of the period.
